Diary of a Sewing Shop – Where do I begin?

  • by

Have you ever wondered how it is possible for so much to happen in a two week period?

Well, in a fortnight where things seem to be settling down a little and I met with my accountant to finalise my year end accounts and tax bill (eeek!!), I have been filling the shop with lots of new fabrics, patterns, workshops and happiness.

Half Term Workshops

In a busy half term week we ran two children’s workshops.  The first was ‘Machine Basics’ where we taught the children everything they needed to know about using a sewing machine.  This is a great beginner workshop and prepares the children for sewing their first project.

Next we had a workshop where the children made useful drawstring bags.  They results were fantastic and it was great fun.  It is always so interesting to see which fabrics they choose.

We will be running more children’s workshops in the February half term and the details will be released shortly.

If you would like to make your own order our drawstring bag pdf pattern.

Free Motion Applique Stag Cushion

We also ran our Free Motion Applique Stag Cushion workshop.  And although we have advertised this as a Christmas themed workshop, depending on the fabric you choose, this cushion can be used anytime!

It has always been so popular and I am delighted to now release the pattern.  It is available to purchase as a pdf download from our website or you can get a paper copy from the shop.

New Fabrics! Yay!

Tuesday saw three new deliveries arrive within hours of each other and they all had to be sorted out before our Sew Shop and Tell sewcial in the evening.  Eeek!

First in was a mixture of brushed cotton twill, brushed cotton and viscose.

They all arrived on rolls and needed to be folded onto boards.  Thankfully I have managed to get it all done now and you will find them displayed on our shelves.

The twill fabrics are 100% cotton, slightly brushed and the twill weave makes them drape like a slightly heavier viscose fabric.  They will be lovely and warm.

Wild Garden cotton twill fabric – green

Our delivery also included two brushed cotton fabrics that are so soft and cuddly.

You all seem to love a viscose fabric so I added three new ones to my order.

Paisley Floral viscose fabric

And, of course whether we like it or not, it is sweater weather!  So I was really excited to take delivery of these super cosy Barso cable knit fabrics.  They were very popular last year and I think we may be needing them this winter.

New Haberdashery

Our Haberdashery order included quite a few zips.  I place an order every month and there are always a number of different ones that need to be restocked.

Did you know that all of our zips are available to purchase on our website?  We have so many different colours and sizes of skirt/dress zips, concealed/invisible zips, open ended zips and chunky open ended zips.

Sew Shop & Tell

Amazingly I did manage to get the orders unpacked in time for another fabulous Sew Shop and Tell evening on Tuesday.

It is always so lovely to see everyone and chat about all things sewing.  Thank you so much to everyone that came along.

Our next event will be held on Tuesday 6th December, between 6pm and 9pm.  This will be Christmas themed and full details will be available soon.

Pattern of the Month

In my quest to add some plain colours to my wardrobe, this month I chose to make the Northcote skirt from Style Arc.

It is a very simple skirt pattern designed for knit fabrics.  The elastic waist makes it comfortable to wear and it is slightly A-line.

I chose our super soft purple Paula ponteroma fabric that has a ribbed texture that makes it look like needlecord.

This is a very simple skirt that is quick to sew.

Pattern Pairings

In my quest to help you visualise the fabrics and patterns a bit better, I have recently put together the following:

Fabric – Virginia double sided boiled wool
Pattern – Friday Pattern Company Cambria duster
Fabric – Yvonne tartan ponteroma
Pattern – Nina Lee Camden skirt or pinafore
Fabric – Sara 21 wale floral babycord
Pattern – Megan Nielsen Protea skirt

Top Tip

Wherever I can, I try to share a few simple nuggets of information that hopefully make your sewing projects a little easier.

The latest one was shown to me by a lovely customer and it is one of those things that is so obvious when you know about it!

Top Tip – when changing a needle, place a piece of paper or fabric under the foot. This will prevent the needle from disappearing into the bobbin casing if accidentally dropped.
Sewing is something you do to calm you, to relax you.

In our busy fortnight we also had a delivery of five new sewing patterns.  As there is already a lot of information in this newsletter, I will save the details for next time.  However, in the meantime they are available to view in the ‘New In’ section of the website.

I wish you a happy weekend and as it appears to be sewing weather, I wish you many blissful hours working on your projects.

Happy sewing!!
